You meet someone online you've never met before. The only language you've got in common is English. You start by getting to know each other. Through conversation you discover what you have in common and how you differ. Here are some basics you'll need.

By the end of these sessions you will be able to introduce yourself, talk about your family, job, where you come from and your experience of the world. You’ll also learn about someone from a somewhere else and enrich your life. Work through these common scenarios and you'll be ready to get to know someone new easily and with confidence.

Some observations
Building online relationships follows the same general rules that apply in the real world. There are, however, some special considerations that apply online.

- Try not to use text shorthand when using English online.
- Spelling, grammar and sentence construction are important.
- Consider using an online translator and dictionary.

- You'll build lasting trust only by being honest.
- Be yourself and expect others to be who they say they are.
- Find a decent Skype name.
- Don't lure others with a phoney photo.
- Have a web based and informative personal profile.

- Be as culturally sensitive as possible.
- Give the other person time to translate and respond.
- Managing several simultaneous chats is exhausting.
- Try to meet when you say you will.
- Check your Skype chat histories.
- Learn to use Google Earth.

- Adopt zero tolerance to abuse. Report it and block pests.
- Take your time and stay within your comfort zone.
- Move from text to voice and video only when you're ready.
- You probably don't need to swap email addresses immediately.
- Exchange files, photos and web links judiciously.
- Let your parents, partners and friends know who you're in touch with.

- Generally speaking cold-callers are considered a nuisance.
- Respect others' Skype status. Busy means busy!
- Change your own Skype status appropriately.
- Avoid never ending goodbyes.

Bye :)
